Rome
3Gay Rome
Rome is the fashionable capitol, and largest city, of Italy. It is also one of the most storied, known for epic ruins such as the Coliseum, which is the largest amphitheatre every built in ancient Roman times. This history permeates every corner of Rome, bringing visitors face-to-face with great treasures like the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican Museums or the gay Viale San Giovanni.
Rome enjoys a Mediterranean climate typical of the Italian coast, with mild springs and autumns segueing into chilly winters and steamy summers. Ottobrate is the symphonic name given by Romans to the “beautiful October days,” when it is sunny and warm with less oppressive heat then the summertime.
Rome is the center of rail travel in Italy; so over 400,000 travelers passing through the Termini every day contribute to the city’s frenetic energy. Once you have arrived, there is an underground system that covers most of the city. Above ground, there are buses trams, and light-rail that makes Rome a relatively easy to navigate.
Fortunately, for a city of its size, Rome has few violent crimes. Pickpockets, however, are everywhere! Be especially wary of groups of children trained to overwhelm you, and sneak away with your wallet. The popular Via Veneto is often targeted; so if a stranger approaches you asking questions in Italian, or pointing out a spill on your clothes, keep one hand on your wallet!
