Gay San Francisco
San Francisco is saturated with gay people, history, and pride. The Castro District is San Francisco’s main gay neighborhood and home to its GLBT community. The Castro is constantly pulsing with energy acting as a meeting place for all things diverse, and of course the Castro is, “the” spot for leisure time San Francisco gay activities and events. Not to mention Castro Street Fair and the annual SF PRIDE celebration festivities happen here each year.
Twin Peaks bar, the first gay bar in San Francisco to have windows greets most first time visitors and locals alike directly on Market Street welcoming all. What used to be the intersection for the gay rights movement, today gives way to community and a feeling of home instigated by its proactive GLBT residents. On any given day, you can walk this intersection and be a part of history while “Gays” can be seen teaming out of every retail store, bar, dance club, and restaurant for blocks. Additionally, the world famous Castro Theatre can be seen illuminating Castro Street signaling to any unaware traveler you are in fact in the gayest neighborhood in the world.
San Francisco's climate is mild and manageable all year round. Most days begin with fog, but it usually burns off after a few hours only to reveal warm sunshine. Winter is San Francisco's rainy season so be sure to dress appropriately! The best time to visit this Bay Area haven is the fall because the weather is warm and the rains haven't yet set in.
The easiest way to get into the city is to fly directly info SFO International Airport. Sometimes cheaper flights go to the nearby Oakland Airport so be sure to check before booking those flights. Once you are in the city, BART and Muni are the best public transportation ways to get around. The city is relatively small in area so it is easy to walk around, although driving is always an option. If you drive, beware that some streets can be steep and there might be limited or expensive parking in touristy areas!
