Algonquin Hotel
The inspiration for the New Yorker magazine, as well as the infamous meeting place for literati and celebrated performers, The Algonquin is simply legendary. After more than a century in business, the hotel is still one of the most popular luxury properties in Manhattan. Step into their lobby on any given evening and you will find a diverse mix of New York’s cultural and artistic elite. Enjoy a fantastic meal at the Round Table Restaurant and later, sip a martini at Blue Bar. Today, The Algonquin continues to be a great place to share ideas, insights and the designs that become the fabric of America’s most cosmopolitan city.
Overview
In 1902, an intimate hotel with a red brick and limestone façade opened its doors in what had become one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Manhattan. The two most popular restaurants of the era – Sherry’s and Delmonico’s – were within walking distance. Five of New York’s great clubs – Yale, Harvard, Bar Association, New York Yacht, and the Century – were neighbors.
Today, The Algonquin remains true to late owner Frank Case’s vision to make the property a hub for New York’s literary and theatrical life. His enduring fascination with actors and writers led him to extend them credit, in the process luring such luminaries as Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. and John Barrymore. He also provided a place to gather and free food to the group of young writers and wits who would become the Algonquin Round Table (although they dubbed themselves the Vicious Circle).
Throughout numerous renovations, The Algonquin continues to maintain the qualities that keep the most discriminating guests coming back. The hotel lobby features rich colors, luxurious fabrics and unique finishes – along with a distinctive sense of conviviality that makes it “Manhattan’s living room.”
The most important tradition that continues is the hospitality of the hotel staff. The hotel notes each guest’s individual requirements and preferences, so that upon return, their wishes can be attended to in advance. One critic wrote: “The Algonquin is one of the fast diminishing breed of hotels – those that still boast personality.”
Designated a New York City landmark, The Algonquin is a remarkable hotel for guests itching to write the next great novel or an interesting short story in their own lives.
