The Ladies Hit the Town

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The last week of February in Puerto Vallarta welcomes lesbians from around the globe for a week of fun in the sun.  The 3rd Annual Vallarta Heat event is without a doubt the hottest week for women all year.

During the week there are a host of planned events, including clubbing (of course), ATV rides, canopy tours, private parties and days at the beach.

Here’s a list of the most popular bars to hit up that week (and any other, really):

**Uncommon Grounds Chill Out Lounge
Run by two witty expats from New Jersey, Uncommon Grounds is a mainstay in Vallarta.  You get more than drinks at Uncommon Grounds, including a restaurant, an aromatherapy center and a gift shop for a complete multi-sensory experience. Located on Lazaro Cardenas 625 in Colonia Emiliano Zapato

**Apaches Martini Bar & Bistro
This little sidewalk bar is the main lesbian hangout in the Zona Romantica.  Located on the main gay strip, you can spend hours people watching and having a great time. Located in the Romantic Zone at Olas Altas #439

For more information on Vallarta Heat you can visit the website www.vallartaheat.com.  Unfortunately, the details for 2010 are not online yet but Michelle Smith, producer of Vallarta Heat, is very responsive to her emails.

If you go: Girl hangouts in Dallas

The cast from "Dallas"

The cast from "Dallas"

Whenever I think of Dallas, I hear the theme song to the popular 80s TV series of the same name. Or of white male Republicans who own oil companies. I certainly don’t think of a thriving gay scene, but then again, my view of Dallas is limited to said show. Apparently, it’s a big ol’ hub for us queer folk.

My good friend Jen D. lives in Dallas and happily provided us with this rundown of lesbian hangouts. The most popular is Sue Ellen’s, according to Jen. I recall Sue Ellen being quite the hottie cougar on “Dallas,” although she was always drunk – apparently that’s the hook for a great lesbian bar.

In Jen’s words …

The “Gayborhood” is the usual reference for the Cedar Springs area. Popular bars are based on names from the famed TV show: JR’s, Sue Ellen’s, Buddies and Round-Up Saloon.

The community staple and most popular bar is Sue Ellen’s. In May 2008, it moved from its old location to a new one a block away. It is still on the “strip” in the gayborhood, but is much larger now. Downstairs is for dancing, playing pool and partying. They play good dance music (popular and mainstream) and have a DJ. Upstairs is for live bands and also has an outdoor patio. It’s open daily. Fridays are fun, Saturdays are wild and jam-packed. Sundays are great too (we call it Sunday Funday here) with live music and relaxing, starts early afternoon.

If you go: Girl hangouts in San Diego

I don’t know what you think, ladies, but sometimes I find it difficult to be a lesbian in a gay man’s world.

Have you ever traveled to a city only to find that you can’t find the women? Sure, that review you read about that gay bar said it had a “mixed crowd.”  Right. Translated, that means all guys and two girls. I know you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Gay men get all the good hangouts. Wherever they go, they are greeted with a feast of nightlife options. For us it’s slim-pickin’s. We get certain nights at bars — the first Wednesday of the month, every other Tuesday, one Sunday per month. You need a damn Google calendar just to keep it all straight.

Starting now, I’m going to do what I can to help. On occasion, I will post a schedule of ladies’ nights in various cities, with the help of insiders. If you want to be an insider, let me know. I need all the help I can get. Either leave a comment or contact me here.

First stop is San Diego. I got this scoop from Angie R., an acquaintance of mine who knows the girl scene out there.
