Carlos Dishes on Where to Brunch in NYC

"Another New York City Sunday brunch favorite of mine is a place that, for another 25 days, you can call this restaurant Park Avenue Winter."

I recently came to one of my favorite hotels in New York, the Yotel, to try their Sunday Brunch, hosted by Patrick Duffy. I just have to say that from now on this will be a keeper on my list! There was a great mixed crowd with a fun and relaxed attitude. Do you hear that Chelsea Brunch restaurants?: NO attitude! You just pay $35 for an all you can eat and drink brunch and they treat you like a much-valued customer. At the Yotel’s Sunday brunch, they offer a lovely selection of tapas style dishes. I highly recommend the Fried Shrimp or the Salmon and Chicken Wontons. Drinks flow freely and you have two hours from the moment you sit to enjoy live performances, DJs and an overall great atmosphere.

Another New York City Sunday brunch favorite of mine is a place that, for another 25 days, you can call this restaurant Park Avenue Winter. Aside from being a great restaurant with superb service, it hosts a great concept: the menu, wine list, and whole decoration of the restaurant changes with the season. Recognized by the New York Times and New York Observer as one of the best new restaurants, Park Avenue Winter has returned to the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

The design team used Captain James Cook‘s explorative travels as a loose design reference. They looked at the regions he had visited in each of his major expeditions as a way of framing each season. Park Avenue Winter includes a refined interpretation of the season, adding details such as lacquered panel moldings, coffers with mismatched plaster rosettes, and vintage British military buttons and custom crystal and glass chandeliers. All of the polished architectural elements blend with more rustic items, such as elongated birch branches built into the lighting elements, raw leathers and white-washed woods. Winter pays homage in part to Cook’s travels in the Antarctic Circle, combined with a classic drawing room aesthetic. To fully celebrate the food and atmosphere of Winter, try out Park Avenue Winter’s Sunday brunch- before the season changes!

For Lauderdale has notoriously beautiful weather, especially when the rest of the country is bundled up for winter. March is the best time to visit town, with low temperatures only in the 60’s. Rainy season in Florida doesn’t begin until the beginning of summer, so winter is actually an excellent time to travel to this Southeastern city. Between Fort Lauderdale and Miami which is not too far away, there is plenty to do in Florida this time of year!

Portland is a beautiful city all year round, but is especially nice as a coastal destination with relatively mild winters. This quirky urban playground has lots to offer even when the weather is a bit on the gloomy side. There is a lot of great art and creativity going on in this innovative town, with tons of incredible thinkers wracking their brains in the well-known bookshops and cafes around the city.

Australia is known for its incredible summer-time surfing and beautifully warm weather during this time of year. Because of its location in the Southern hemisphere, March falls during Australia’s summer and is a great place to go to get away from the cold! To get down to the business of fabulous, check out Glamazon featuring Ru Paul happening at the beginning of the month in Sydney.

Now that we have filled your heads with all sorts of ideas regarding your Dirty Thirty travel here are some tips to make those travels even more enjoyable...

	Snow Driving

When driving on snowy mountain roads, make sure to have snow chains on hand and ready to be installed – in many areas they are required. Also, cold weather deflates tires so make sure to fill them up before hitting the road. It is helpful to have rest-stops and alternative hotels planned out in case of road closures or weather-delays

	Hydration

Even if the weather is cold, dehydration is absolutely something to be aware of and avoid, especially while engaging in winter sports. Be sure to get plenty of water in between ski and snowboarding runs, or even while being out and about in your winter town of choice!

	Fly Non-Stop

Because of unexpected weather, plane flights can be delayed for pretty long amounts of time. Because of this, having multiple flights to get to your vacation destination can be problematic. In order to avoid missing your connecting flight, try to book direct flights or leave a good 2-3 hours as a cushion of time for layovers.

"On my first day, I decided to go poolside in a red Speedo. Truth be told, the Speedo really didn’t leave much to the imagination"

Living in Northeastern United States—despite an unusually mild winter—one can’t help but long for a little warmth and color. Here in Rhode Island, the days are short, the trees are bare and the skies are grey.

By February, I usually find myself in the mood for a little ‘pick-me-up’ vacation, and so I hopped on a plane and headed to the gay daddy Mecca that is Palm Springs, California.

Even beyond the beautiful and warm weather, there are so many reasons to love California. The tacos are delicious. The palm trees are innumerable. And, most recently, a federal appeals court ruled that California’s gay marriage ban (known as proposition 8) is unconstitutional. Though the marriage fight is far from over, it’s a sure step in the right direction.

During this year’s visit to Palm Springs, I decided to push my own boundaries and stay at a clothing optional resort called Escape. Palm Springs is, in fact, quite famous for the plethora of gay men’s nude resorts. Some are rather calm and tame, while others are very sexually charged. In the salsa bar of naked resorts, Escape would be considered quite mild.

Despite Escape’s friendly atmosphere and my proclivity toward nudism in the comfort of my own home, it’s another thing entirely to do it in front of an audience. In all my travels, adventures and even visits to nude beaches, I’ve yet to get fully naked in public. I just can’t get myself to do it.
Turns out, things were a bit different for me this year.

On my first day, I decided to go poolside in a red Speedo. Truth be told, the Speedo really didn’t leave much to the imagination; it’s was so ridiculously small that I might as well have been naked. But for me, like the recent ruling on Proposition 8, it was a step in the right direction. Hanging by the pool for an hour, I chatted with the other guests and soaked in some sun.

Later in the afternoon, I returned to my room. As I walked by the hallway mirror, I stopped to admire my newly acquired tan. It was only then that I realized, unbeknownst to me, that I had been experiencing a wardrobe malfunction. My left (beep), presumably for the entire time, had popped out of my Speedo. And it wasn’t just a little peek; it was literally hanging there—bright red and fully sunburned—for the entire world to see.

Sophie Goes to Napa

"My visit began with a drive up to Downtown Napa, where there were more cafes and boutiques that I knew what to do with."

The Napa Valley is known for its beautiful vineyards, elegant cuisine, and quaint boutique shops. Although I am not of legal drinking age and thus cannot participate in any wine tasting quite yet, I took advantage of the opportunity to take a weekend to the Valley to see what else the Bay Area has to offer!

My visit began with a drive up to Downtown Napa, where there were more cafes and boutiques that I knew what to do with. The General Store was the restaurant of choice for lunch, located right in the heart of the town. Then we took a few hours to drive up through the entire Napa Valley, through the towns of Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga. Along the way we soaked up the California sun and the abundance of beautiful vineyards lining the California highway. We even stopped at the Culinary Institute of America to take a tour of the immaculate grounds and well-stocked gift shop. I am not big on cooking, but after seeing what goes on in that magical place I might even consider going to culinary school.

For dinner, we chose to eat at the Rutherford Grill, which had high quality food at really reasonable prices. Afterward we strolled the streets of Downtown Napa, taking in all of the adorable shops we hoped to stop at in the morning. We got our late-night dessert fix (okay, not that late: it was only 9 p.m. but that seems to be late by Napa’s standards) at Annette’s, which had wonderful chocolates and gelato. I may not have been able to drink the wine, but cabernet-infused truffles definitely got the job done! The rest of our night was spent enjoying the lovely fireplace and cozy décor at the River Terrace Inn, our accommodation of choice. Shout-out to the concierge at the Napa Valley Welcome Center: your recommendation went over quite well!

The next morning we got up and strolled around the Oxbow Market, a big trendy warehouse-type building with various eateries and food stands. Food and drinks were abundant even at that hour of the day, so we were definitely satisfied. As if that wasn’t enough, we proceeded on to the Black Bear Diner, which is known for its huge portions and home-cooked meals. The friendly service was just icing on the cake to this delicious meal. As we concluded our Napa visit we made one last loop around the town, walking along the river, and enjoyed the beautiful weather so sporadically occurring in winter. This just goes to show that Napa Valley in the off-season is a close second to the popular harvest tourism time- possibly at half the price! The fact that we couldn’t spend money on any wine tours might have made the difference though.

	XOXO, Sophie

Carlos Dishes on the 21 Club in NYC

"Often, prejudging has a negative impact on your choices; this was the case for me"

Often, prejudging has a negative impact on your choices; this was the case for me. When I was invited to come to 21 Club, the first few thoughts that came to mind were “stuffy, boring and red meat based menu”. Well, let me tell you: I was wrong about all of them! Yes, I had to wear a jacket, and the style there is very slick- but who minds dressing up for the crime?! My night at 21 Club began with a relaxing Grey Goose Vodka Martini with huge olives, and from there I went on to enjoy a fantastic evening in a cozy and bubbling atmosphere.

Both the 21 Bar and the 21 Club were very crowded, for they are located right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan at 52nd Street in between 5th and 6th Avenue. This iconic Orient-Express restaurant offers superb cuisine, a Grand Award-winning wine list, and attentive service in a setting that is sophisticated yet fun. I didn’t even miss the opportunity to step down and check out the legendary Prohibition-era wine cellar. There is such a rich history behind 21 Club that goes beyond the gourmet food experience, which makes this restaurant that much more interesting and irresistible.

The cuisine sticks to the tried and true; 21 Classics, including the burger favored by Ari Onassis, provide the best traditional eating experience. A watering hole for celebrities, captains of industry, world leaders and dignitaries of every order, the Bar Room is also renowned for its “toy” collection of colorful sports memorabilia and corporate logo items presented as gifts to the restaurant. My choices for the night that match with Sancere White wine, were: Seared Spanish Octopus for an appetizer (USD 17) and a main course of Flax Seed-Crusted Escolar, blue prawns, baby bok choy, celeriac purée, and orange-ginger reduction by Executive Chef John Greeley. Score for presentation: 100 points.

As for dessert, my choice was an amazing selection of 3 Cheeses: Humbolt Fog Tomme, Sainte-Maure de Touraine and Bleu D’Auvergne. But I must admit that I was not able to control myself or my sweet tooth- I went on to share half of the Valencia Rice Pudding with my host. Yes, I am guilty of being a big foodie! Whether it’s for a special occasion, reunion with friends, business dinner or simply a drink at the 21 Bar, I strongly recommend 21 Club. And leave your prejudice at home, just as I should have done.

"Both my partner and I have skied for 25 years, but since we were in Aspen for a whole week, we decided to try snowboarding."

Although Aspen Gay Ski Week has come to an end this year we are already excited about what it will bring in 2013! This year we had the opportunity to offer an awesome trip to two lucky winners to attend AGSW courtesy of GayTravel.com, Aspen Gay Ski Week, and our friends at Grindr.

We had a chance to catch up with the winners of this year’s giveaway and this is what they had to say…

“This really was a fantastic trip! Both my partner and I have skied for 25 years, but since we were in Aspen for a whole week, we decided to try snowboarding. After 2 days of lessons and many many falls, we really enjoyed boarding!”

What can you tell us about your host hotel?

The Limelight was a fantastic host hotel. Nothing better than soaking in a hot tub outside with the mountains around you and great looking men surrounding you! Just an absolutely beautiful hotel.

What would you tell other travelers who are thinking about visiting Aspen?

“Aspen itself was one of the most idyllic places I've been. If you like high end shopping and gallery hopping, I'd say the place is second to none! FANTASTIC restaurants! During the week we had several great meals.”

We know that AGSW is packed full of fun events but we would like to know what your favorite was?

“Favorite event? Probably the Pool Party. How can you go wrong with 500 guys in bathing suits, an open bar, fantastic music and a water park that felt like Disney World! There was lots of alcohol consumed and I'll guarantee EVERYONE had a fantastic time!"

"Also, the mountain top dance party on Friday night was fantastic! I did think the music was a bit off that night, but you can hardly go wrong with a gondola ride up and down the mountain in the dark with the lights of Aspen twinkling in the background! Great night! The best dance party was definitely at Belly Up the night before. DJ Corey Craig was on fire!”

Stay tuned for next year and hopefully we can offer another great prize to Aspen Gay Ski Week!

Stay social by checking out Grindr Xtra and all it's new features!

Carlos Melia Visits The Amulet Market in Bangkok

"Located next to the Wat Mahathat, between Maharat Road and the river, is the biggest amulet market in Bangkok"

During my visit to Bankok’s Chinatown, which prides itself as being the oldest Chinatown in the entire world, I saved some extra time to visit the Amulet Market. Located next to the Wat Mahathat, between Maharat Road and the river, is the biggest amulet market in Bangkok. Here I mingled with locals, monks, and tourists- and was amazed by the things I found!

The busiest time of the week to visit this Amulet market is on Sundays when hundreds of people flock in to search for that amulet which will bring a specific kind of luck — to get the girl, to pass your exams, to keep bugs out of your rice stock, or to ward off your mother-in-law. Options for amulets are unlimited and open to each individual’s beliefs. This is the old and traditional Amulet Market; there is also a new one close to the Golden Mount, but I felt this one was more real and local because of its location in the heart of ChinaTown and next to one of the oldest shrines in the city.

What is the slight difference between an Amulet and a Talisman? Amulets (known as “par”), represent the image of a monk in the form of a small portrait or bust. Talisman (known as “kreung rang”), are any other type of holy symbols that range from classic Buddhas, elephants like Ganesh, monkeys- and even to the extreme of male penis which represents fertility and power. Known as “palad khik”, penis talismans are a common sight in Thailand: they are worn by men or are on display in homes and restaurants. I would like to offer special thanks to Douglas and Mickey at Purple Dragon Travel for assisting me with this amazing full day of touring the City of Bangkok, by the hand of local, charismatic and knowledgeable guides. This wonderful experience was truly life changing; I have my luck to show for it!

The Inside Scoop: NYC

"New York is trendy, and there is always something new and hot going on, such as a club opening or a new movie premiering. "

Q & A with our friends at the Duane Street Hotel NYC

What makes New York City such a great LGBT destination?

“New York has so much to do from restaurants to historic attractions to theatre, you have it all. You can also visit other places like Long Island or upstate New York.

What are some hotspots gay and lesbian travelers should check out when they are in the city?

"New York is trendy, and there is always something new and hot going on, such as a club opening or a new movie premiering. If you are looking for nightlife some of the cities hottest hang outs would be establishments like Splash, Therapy, or Boxers NYC. If you are looking for some history visit Ty’s or Stonewall, both have been significant stomping grounds in the city for decades."

What are the top five reasons for gay travelers to visit New York City?

Reason One: “For the downtown Feel” Especially for those traveling from a rural part of the world the city is really something to behold. You can get whatever you want whenever you want it, if it tickles your fancy, it’s yours. And if at any time you need to see some green you can take a stroll amongst the lush 843 acres of Central Park.

Reason Two: “Broadway” There is always something new on Broadway yet you can still catch all the classics.

Reason Three: “Shopping” nowhere else in the U.S do you have the shopping experience you have in NYC. From 3 for $10 t-shirts on the corner to Gucci or Valentino the city holds the key to all things fashion.

Reason Four: “The dollar goes further” In particular, those who are traveling from Europe or Asia, are able to do and see much more for their money.

Reason Five: “Restaurants” NYC is home nearly 25,000 different restaurants, need we say more?

Why should gay travelers book at your property instead of other properties in the area?

“We are a true Boutique property, with a quiet environment, and a short walk or cab drive to some of the cities best. We also have a great restaurant and offer our guests the option to work out at the local Equinox Gym.”

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

“New York City is truly a year round destination. All the piers have been recently renovated, so the outdoor types can enjoy things like biking along Hudson, or rollerblading.”

Prop 8 Declared Unconstitutional

"Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gay men and lesbians in California.”

A federal appeals court in San Fran ruled that Prop 8, California’s ban on gay marriage, violates the 14th amendment. Regarding the decision, Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote: “All that Proposition 8 accomplished was to take away from same sex-couples the right to be granted marriage licenses and thus legally to use the designation ‘marriage.’ … Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gay men and lesbians in California.” The case will likely head to the Supreme Court, according to The New York Times. While its fate in the nation’s highest court is uncertain, today’s decision does guarantee the type of progress the LGBT community is fighting for.

Carlos Melia Dishes on the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle

"If there was one hotel I visited in 2011 that went above and beyond any expectations, it was the Four Seasons Tented Camp at Golden Triangle."

If there was one hotel I visited in 2011 that went above and beyond any expectations, it was the Four Seasons Tented Camp at Golden Triangle. This beautiful hotel is located in the northern region of Thailand, right on the border with Lao and Burma. Imagine the best of Four Seasons signature luxury, style and customer service, combined with the exuberant beauty of the bamboo jungles of Chiang Rai province in the outdoors. All of this is surrounded by a local Elephant camp, Burmese chanting monks in the mornings, and the serene waters of the Mekong River. To sum this experience up: train to become a Mahout, live with the elephants in full luxury, enjoy all-inclusive adventures, spoil yourself at a full service outdoor spa, and dine like a king or queen.

My tent was stunning, comfortable, and had a breathtaking balcony overlooking the Ruak River. Waking up each morning was a ritual of relaxation, mixed with Burmese monks chanting along with the local birds and enjoyment of the most beautiful views of the Golden Triangle’s jungle. This was rightfully followed by a walk out to the outdoor shower and bath in full sync with nature. Accommodations here are part of an all-inclusive package designed for active adults. The package includes round-trip airport transfer, meals, house wines and spirits, elephant trekking, a spa treatment, and more. Tents are named after local hill tribes, and fauna and flora and are uniquely decorated in an individual color scheme with coordinated furnishings. The whole complex was exquisitely conceived and designed by internationally renown Bill Bensley, with whom I had the honor to share my stay.

I arrived to the Camp by speed boats from Golden Triangle after a one hour transfer from Chaing Rai International Aiport. The Four Seasons also provided modern Mercedes-Benz units with charming and knowledgeable drivers. Tented Camp is not a hotel or a resort, it is a full range life experience that will linger in your mind for the rest of your life. One of the main fully included activities is the Mahout Training day with the Elephants of the Camp. Walk with them and on top of them, feed them, bathe them- it is all just unbelievable. Breakfast every morning was a delight, and not only because of the exquisite options served in full class by the staff of the resort. The company of your hosts the elephants was the best part, for they expect you to feed them as many bananas as possible at the time!

Photos Courtesy of the Four Seasons

This was my morning visit to the Elephant Camp itself, where the Mahouts live, coexist and train with the elephants on the daily basis. It is fair and necessary to mention the efforts of Four Seasons Thailand and the local Mahout community that went into creating this camp. The Camp has focused on taking the elephants out of the streets of Thailand, giving then the care and attention they need, and returning them to their natural habitat. Congratulations Four Seasons and all those involved into this project!

Someone once told me “don’t ever compete with animals or kids”, and in the case of the Four Seasons Camp, it is fully outshone by their main hosts, the elephants. But trust me, there is nothing to regret about this. The sole reason why one can enjoy this whole experience in full is the silent and behind-the-scenes flawless operation of the local staff as well as the signature comfort, style and customer service of Four Seasons.

The spa is a symbiotic experience with nature in the most incredible outdoors setting. I must say that I took a ninety minute Mahout Massage, and I only remember the therapist saying welcome and asking me to lay on the massage bed. After that I just passed out and enjoyed the full journey of traditional Thai massage and innovative rituals enhanced by the healing power of mountain botanicals and local warming spices. My tip: take your massage around sunset time to enjoy the best of the afternoon and arriving night atmosphere.

Overall, this was an unforgettable experience for those looking for luxury in every sense of the word. Please let the staff know that Carlos told you that you must try the Cobra Whiskey- but be ready for after effects! I also strongly recommend taking the half day tour of Golden Triangle and the markets using over four types of transportation and briefly crossing to Lao. Also if you are into Polo, keep an eye to their yearly Polo Tournament- on elephants of course!

Davey Wavey’s 10 Reasons to Love Traveling by Train

"Let’s be real: Air travel is great—but it can be a real pain in the ass (and not the good kind)"

Let’s be real: Air travel is great—but it can be a real pain in the ass (and not the good kind). It’s a hugely inconvenient convenience, and many people would jump at any feasible alternative.

Last weekend, I traveled to New York City. It’s a short plane ride from my house (less than a half hour), but I opted for a different form of transportation. I took the train.

When it comes to Americans and vacation transportation, one survey found that nearly 90% of us travel by car, 7.5% by plane, 2.1% by bus—and a measly 0.8% by rail. I think it’s time we reverse the trend and show some love for train transport.

	Here’s why:

	1. No security lines. While airlines recommend getting to the airport two hours early, Amtrak recommends just thirty. In addition, you won’t be asked to remove your shoes, throw out liquids or deal with quart-sized baggies of toiletries. It’s a lot less hassle.

	2. No baggage fees. $25 checked bag fees, no more! Amtrak won’t charge you for your luggage—and there’s no extra fee if it’s heavy. While train tickets aren’t much cheaper than flying, you’ll save a bundle if you’re traveling with more than a carryon.

	3. More legroom. A few extra inches can make a world of difference. And sitting on a train, you’ll definitely notice. With plenty of room to stretch and spread out, you’ll feel like you’re traveling first class.

	4. It’s relaxing. While many people find traveling stressful, trains are one of the easiest ways to go. The atmosphere is always more subdued and your fellow travelers will be a lot less frazzled. It’s a great time to catch up on your favorite book or to just kick back and enjoy the scenery.

	5. Fewer weather delays. Rain, sleet, snow or shine, Amtrak trains are less affected by weather conditions. While airports are closed or flights are canceled, the trains are much more reliable—especially in northern or snowy climates.

	6. WiFi and plugs. I love that Amtrak trains are equipped with plugs and, more recently, free WiFi. If you have work to do, it’s easy to get things done. The WiFi can be spotty at times, but it’s a great feature-in-progress.

	7. 8 inches of recline. On a tightly packed plane, you’re lucky if you get two inches of recline. On a train, you get a full eight inches. It’s magnificent—and is extremely conducive to napping.

	8. Stay connected! While air travelers must power down their phones and other electronic devices, there are no such concerns with rail travel. Provided you’re not in a designated “quiet car,” you’re free to use your phone as much as you’d like. And when the battery runs low, you’ll have an electrical outlet to power it up!

	9. Don’t lose your bags. Ever lose your bags flying? Welcome to the club. On Amtrak, you’re your own bag handler. Unless you forget them on the train, they’re getting off with you. There’s no chance of you connecting to Atlanta and your bags arriving at O’Hare.

	10. Greener. Depending on a number of variables including the type of train and aircraft, rail travel can represent a 70% - 90% reduction in CO2 emissions. For anyone being mindful of their carbon footprint, traveling by train is significantly greener.

Of course, train travel isn’t for everyone and every trip. The destinations are limited to the tracks, but if you’re looking to travel on a route served by rail, consider giving trains another chance. I think you’ll be glad you did.

Are you a fan of train travel? Let me know about it in the comments below!

Jamaica is a Dangerous Place for Gays and Lesbians

"Lesbians are not the only victims of such horribly violent crimes. Tomlinson reports that 70 percent of attacks brought to the attention of rights organizations between 2009 and 2011 concerned gay men"

By Branka Juran and Maria Caspani

According to Jamaica’s leading gay activists, Jamaican Lesbians face attacks such as gang rape due to rampant homophobia throughout the country. Few of these violent crimes get reported.

“In Jamaican culture women are generally expected to be quiet about harassment and abuse,” says Jamaica’s top gay activist and HIV/AIDS campaigner, Maurice Tomlinson, in an interview with TrustLaw.

Lesbians are not the only victims of such horribly violent crimes. Tomlinson reports that 70 percent of attacks brought to the attention of rights organizations between 2009 and 2011 concerned gay men.

Under Jamaican law it’s legal to persecute against any act of physical intimacy between men with a jail sentence and the possibility of 10-years of hard labor.

Tomlinson went to London this week to receive the prestigious David Kato award for gay human rights activism.

“When we find out about these cases (involving gay women), they are usually so horrible that they rise up to the level of having to be reported,” he states.

Tomlinson is a legal advisor for the rights group AIDS Free World, assisting them in forging a structured way to address homophobia throughout the country and documenting human rights crimes against LGBT people.

When he initially began recording accounts of abuses, Tomlinson was disgusted by the sheer brutality of many of these acts.

“There was one instance where a gang of four men raped a lesbian because they said she was ‘taking over all good looking women’, Tomlinson remembers.

“They cut her genitals, so she could ‘better take men’ because ‘that is why she was a lesbian’, they said.

With 82 percent of its citizens against homosexuality – according to the results of a recent survey – Jamaica is one of the most dangerous places in the world for gay people.

"The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays (J-FLAG) reported in June (2011) that 51 homophobic incidents had been reported in Jamaica between January and June 2011, representing a rise compared to the same period over 2010,” according to a report released in September 2011 by Amnesty International.

Endorsement of homophobic behavior used to come directly from the country’s political establishment. Former PM Bruce Golding was openly homophobic and stated he would never appoint an LGBT person to cabinet.

Now, some – even if feeble – signals of change are starting to emerge.

In January, the recently elected Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller had made some promising statements regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT).

“I think she (Simpson-Miller) genuinely does not have a problem with LGBT people and does not pry to people’s bedrooms,” Tomlinson remarks.

Nonetheless, homophobia is still rampant in almost every aspect of the Caribbean island’s society.

Citizens attend church where they listen to pastors preaching that homophobia causes diseases; then they turn on the radio to hear popular Jamaican musicians such as Buju Banton and Beenie Man using anti-gay lyrics.

Tomlinson himself has received numerous death threats.

After news of Tomlinson’s marriage to a Canadian man sparked a bought of tension in Jamaica, it was decided it would be best for him to not return home. He is waiting on Jamaican authorities to assure him it is going to be safe to return.

The Inside Scoop: Maui

"Oahu has 1.3 million residents living on the island full time and is 597 square miles in size. Maui on the other hand only has 110,000 residents and is 738 square miles in size"

There is no better perspective than that of a resident and LGBT community member to get the real scoop on a city and what it offer the community. Recently we had the opportunity to speak with the owners of the Maui Sunseeker LGBT Resort and here is what they had to tell us...

Can you tell us about Maui?

When people think of Hawaii, they have the image of Honolulu and Waikiki on the island of Oahu because that is the image portrayed by television and most media outlets. Unfortunately, that is not representative of our island, Maui and our city of Kihei. The population numbers tell all with the comparison. Oahu has 1.3 million residents living on the island full time and is 597 square miles in size. Maui on the other hand only has 110,000 residents and is 738 square miles in size. So you can imagine the massive amount of untouched beauty that Maui beholds.

Kihei in Hawaiian translates to mean a woman’s shawl. The native Hawaiians named this city so to mean it is cloaked or protected because the city is in a bay formed by the West Maui Mountains to the Northwest and the Haleakala crater to the Southeast. Additionally, the islands of Lanai, Molokini and Kahoolawe sit just off the coast and protect the bay from large waves. As a result, this is the ideal location for the latest rage of stand-up paddle board in the morning when the waters are calm. It's then transforms to be the ideal location for windsurfers in the afternoon when the trade winds pick up.

Kihei is on the leeward side of the island, meaning it's much more sunny than the other side. In fact, it only rains in Kihei about 4 days out of the year and most times it's in short periods, not for the entire day. So our resort is ideally located where our LGBT tourists can get everything they want. There’s enough natural beauty to soak in but enough shops, restaurants and nightlife nearby to make it not feel totally isolated. Kihei is also just a 15 minute drive to ‘Little Beach’ at Makena, Maui’s clothing optional beach that has its own section for LGBT visitors and residents. And did we mention it's paradise here? So you can surely expect Little Beach to be breathtakingly beautiful as well as the view from your room.

What does Maui have to offer the LGBT traveler?

Most resort destinations really have two gay communities and Maui is no different. The local community tends to socialize in their own 'family' in private homes, informal groups or an excursion to the beach, most likely being Little Beach in Makena. Little Beach, a 10 minute drive from the Sunseeeker, is Maui’s clothing optional beach with a gay/lesbian section. Although the local LGBT community is typically low-key, there are frequent social events and fundraisers that Sunseeker guests are welcome to attend, such as the Gay Whale Watch Tour. The other gay group on Maui is made up of vacationing singles or couples, many of whom return to the island every year. The scene on Maui isn't focused so much on high energy or heavy cruising but more on enjoying the incredible beauty found here while meeting new friends that sometimes last a lifetime.

Whichever group you identify with, you'll find lots of opportunities to have fun, participate in activities and mix with the locals. Information on current local gay activities can be found online at mauigayinfo.com. There currently is no full-time gay bar, but all establishments are gay friendly, and a several have regular gay/lesbian nights. The LGBT population is second in size to that on Oahu. The biggest concentration of the LGBT community is in the Kihei area of South Maui, although we are everywhere on the island!

In your opinion what are the top 5 reasons to visit your city?

	1. The breathtaking beauty of Maui "The native Hawaiians have a phrase to describe the island of Maui. It is said ‘Maui No Ka Oi’ meaning Maui is the Best! That long held view by the natives is shared by almost all of the tourists and visitors that have traveled through the other beautiful islands that make up the state of Hawaii."

	2. Top world travelers rank this as the number one island destination in the world. "For 17 of the past 24 years, the readers of Conde Naste magazine, a well traveled group, have ranked Maui as the number one island in the world. Not just the US but the entire world! It's an amazing reputation that all Maui residents work very hard to achieve year after year."

	3. It is an amazing place to have fun in paradise. "Where else can you go on seasonal whale watch boat rides with amazing snorkel adventures, the best water sports and just the awesome natural beauty that surrounds you?"

	4. While it is paradise, you are not on a desert island. "The best part of Maui is that you can enjoy the beauty and the peace of the island while still having the best that civilization has to offer. From Ruth Chris’ to Longhi’s to Spago’s to Mama’s Fish House, some of the world’s finest restaurants are right here. If a cocktail on a lanai watching the sunset is your thing, there are dozens of places to take that in too. Or if you want to have a hike to a remote waterfall that is all to yourself, we can arrange that. It's the best of all worlds."

	5. The people of Maui "Because you’ve heard it so many times, you may think it's a marketing gimmick, but the Aloha spirit is alive and extremely strong on Maui. It means all the native Hawaiians and the other Maui residents love their lives here so much, they enjoy sharing their beautiful paradise with visitors. This place just has an amazing spirituality about it that just rings sincere. All of our guests just feel so special by just being here."

Can you tell our readers why they should visit your property?

"We want to be sure our guests don’t just come here for a tan, but instead experience the island and all she has to offer from recreation to the amazing beauty that surrounds us. Through our complimentary concierge service, sunseekeractivities.com we provide the best activities from providers that are either gay owned, operated or friendly. We make sure they live up to the same standard we provide from the hotel so our guests feel just as comfortable experiencing Maui with them as they do being loved and accepted in the comfort of the resort. It's a major objective we constantly strive for."

"Additionally, we can make any travel budget work at various price points that our guests consistently return to us for. With an Average Daily Room Rate of about $150/night and most of our rooms well appointed with full kitchens, it's a bargain that they rave about. In fact, one reporter from another magazine/website raved that ‘the Maui Sunseeker provides Four Seasons quality of stay for budget prices’. We are proud of our reputation and work hard to be sure every detail is attended to for our guests. We will never disappoint our guests. We promise."
